Ficlet, movie, and another tiny trip solvent90 wrote me this gorgeous little promptfic to the tune of, John/Rodney, outflame. :D :: I watched Latter Days and couldn't help but be glued to the screen. ( Spoilers for Latter Days, with fanfic parallels )For context, tinnny over in her LJ has been going through After Elton's list of 50 Greatest Gay movies, and I proceeded to buy this one and Shelter. So far, I'm pleased. :: I'll be in Munich for the weekend, to see the best sister in the whole wide world. But she goes by vervealemania, still. Additions and improvements for Paid Feature
We've made some additions and improvements to Notes! The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:- You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
- On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")
Other changes:- When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
- Changes to editing:
- When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
- You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
- You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
- When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares!
Notes augmented
We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!
Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
LiveJournal Cares
We’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Updating LJ flist
Aw, I always feel uncomfortable doing this, but the number of feeds to my LJ flist was getting a bit too big for me to follow, so I've done some -- oh, horrible word -- unfriending. ACK. Anyway, if an LJ has had nothing posted for years, if the owner of the LJ has moved on to topics that don't capture my attention, if it's clear the owner of the LJ is no longer captured by my interests, or if I made a mistake, I unchecked the little "friend" box. If the latter, let me know! But remember that I never use filters, either to read or to post, nor do I ever limit my posts to just "friends." My door and LJ are always open. And now, two gifts, just in case you missed them. First, the most recent blog by Maira Kalman, E Pluribus Unum, about her visit to the nation's capital. I love the bathrooms! And this: The system is supposed to be cumbersome. And yesterday's Kate Beaton post for Veterans Day, Dry Matches. Remembrance Day always makes me ruminative about the place of history in our current consciences, because it is one of the few holidays where we are explicitly told listen you have to remember this thing that happened ok and, one, people pay attention, two, there is nothing jamming the line like bbq's or parties or football games or chocolate eggs or presents. History: You should give a shit, who knew.ETA: Dammit, I forgot one category of people I also unfriended (Jesus, I hate that word): people who post on LJ but only accept comments on Dreamwidth. It's just too hard for me to read something exciting! and cool! and want to participate in the discussion! only to learn that it's all happening at DW. It's easier for me not to see the post at all. *makes sad face* If you fall into this category now but later change your mind about permitting comments on LJ or IJ, please please tell me so I can participate again. |

What a stupid couple of days this has turned out to be.
Dear Week: Illness, hospitalization, deaths of relatives, end-of-life scenarios... All on my friends list the last couple of days. Really? No wonder I'm moody. My empathy is going into overdrive, and all anybody can talk about in my "real life" is Thanksgiving and Christmas and stupid shit. (Although my co-worker had to break up with his cheating girlfriend this weekend and is still emo about that...) Meanwhile, people I've never met face-to-face but have nonetheless developed care and concern for are having very real problems. I can't have a good time when everybody around me is having a hard time. Bleagh, Elbie _____________________________________ Tomorrow I'm going to go out and take care of Ruby. Oil change, brushless car wash, wax, vacuum... Because I have the need to take care of people that aren't here, so I'll take care of an inanimate object that is very much here. What's it called? Projection. I can't nurture broken hearts, so I nurture my car. It's something. EDIT FOR MY OWN SAKE, REALLY: I think I might make arrangements to spend a chunk of Christmas Day in Watonga with Jacky and June. It'll get me away from the fam damily and with people I like being around, and I can take Mom along if she wants to go... Current Mood: sympathetic |

Atlantis trying to communicate w/ John
Not sure how old this story is but it deals with Atlantis trying to communicate with John only he doesn't realize it. I think it starts out with him getting headaches and slowly builds until he can't function at all - seeing everything in orange or yellow. I think he contacts Rodney for help before admitting to anyone else that something is wrong. In the end I think he ends up realizing what is going on or something but the colors were a beacon for ZPMs Found by gaffsie, it's Distraction by Lacey McBain. |

Fic-“Long Ago (And Far Away)" Complete by everybetty and Kristen999
Title: “Long Ago (And Far Away)” Complete Authors: everybettyand kristen999Genre: Gen Spoilers: None Words: Complete -90,000- with over forty pictures. Rating: PG-15 Warnings: Soldier language, ethnic slurs associated with the era, and some war violence. Summary: WWII-based AU. The Team as we know it has been transplanted to the South Pacific. Major John Sheppard, his navigator, Lt Rodney McKay, and his gunner, Sgt Ronon Dex, are stationed on the island of New Guinea on the eve of the island nation's greatest battle. Native friend and sometime spy, Teyla Emmagan, aids the efforts against the Evil Axis powers. Authors' Notes: There was an immense amount of research involved in this undertaking; however, we are not historians, so please be aware there will probably be inaccuracies and we did take some liberties with a few historical facts and military protocol for creative license reasons. This fic takes place in the 1940's where the term politically correct hadn't even existed. These are soldiers in the middle of the biggest war most nations have ever been a party to. They smoke, swear, spit and casually use rough language and ethnic, racial and gender-based slurs as was typical of the time. Many thanks to wildcat88 for her betaing and support as well as sharpes_hussy for her invaluable advice. A gigantic, amazing round of applause to tridget for taking all our collected images and creating seamless backdrops and alterations so they could be presented authentically. Feedback as always is appreciated. Complete fic- “ Long Ago (And Far Away)” |

FIC: When The Game Ends, We'll Sing Again (Kirk/McCoy, R) Author: Clio Title: When The Game Ends, We'll Sing Again Pairing: Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura Rating: R Summary: College AU: Four young men meet as Harvard freshmen in 1959. Length: 20,000 words total Disclaimer: This story is based on characters and situations created by Gene Roddenberry and owned by one of the large media companies in a complicated arrangement to which I am not a signatory. No money is being made and no copyright or trademark infringement is intended. Notes: Thanks to rawles and ali_wildgoose for their help and encouragement on this story; all errors are my own. Thanks also to the ol' alma mater; I hope I've done you proud. Title from the unofficial Harvard fight song, "Ten Thousand Men of Harvard." Ridiculous pile of cultural influences listed at the end. Gawd, I'm still mopey about things...
Yeah, so. I can't whisk my family (Mom, Andy, Mickie) away from my fam damily for the holidays and give them an experience for Christmas. And I can't adopt another family that could use some help. But I can throw myself into making sure somebody gets a nice holiday. I can become a soldier's angel. Thank you for the link, ginmar. I can find resources here in town. The Salvation Army (which I always try to help out, due to one side of my family helping found the local chapter) will have their Christmas tree so we can help out at least one kid. (Sometimes the kids ask for Wiis and DS systems, so I don't know about how much we're going to help out, but we did buy a bicycle for a kid once...) I can spread cheer amongst my friends list with cards. (Post for addresses pending - I'll make it screened.) I can focus on what I can do, and try not to dwell on what I can't do. And I think we're going to blow off the fam damily as much as we can. It kind of depends on Thanksgiving. I swear to Harry if one person sneers at Ruby and/or goes "Oh, you got a car just like Youngest Uncle, how cute *chuckle under breath*", I'mma remove the filter between my brain and my mouth (which is usually pretty thick). And then I'll take my broccoli casserole and go home. Ouch. I snarked without stretching. I'll feel that later. ________________________________________ ___ I was going to go for a run, but I'm not going to force myself to exercise. Especially when Harry is going to be on Ellen this morning. Current Mood: okay |
